3 Simple Ways To Make Your Home More Cozy This Fall
Fall is well under way and brought with it beautiful colors and the opportunity to finally whip out those rain boots. If you haven’t gotten to it already, here are some simple decorating ideas to make your home ready for the season!
1. A Front Door Wreath
There is nothing more appealing than a lovely entrance to your home. Adding a seasonal wreath on your front door is a quick and easy way to add warmth and make your home more inviting.
Why not make your own? Gathering branches and decorative elements to use from your garden or during walks can be a really fun family activity. You can also buy a ready-made wreath and customize it!
What you will need:
- A wreath form (this one is a 12in | 30.5cm grapevine base)
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Floral wire
- Jute twine or wreath hanger
- Decorative elements to adorn your wreath
- Inspiration photos
5 Steps to perfection:
Tip: If you harvest natural elements, make sure to clean and dry them before use: this will ensure you can extend the life of your wreath.
- Start by protecting your working surface (the dining table works well) and gathering your supplies.
- Second, add in your base pieces. These are your bulkier items: make sure to balance them on either side. I used small gourds grown in my allotment and secured them tightly with floral wire.
- Glue in your other smaller items: pine cones, acorns, seed heads (I used poppies and fennel), nuts, cinnamon sticks, berries, old potpourri pieces. Add anything you can get your hands on from your garden, favorite craft shop or walks in the forest that matches your color scheme. Make sure to sprinkle these evenly all around your wreath at various angles.
- Time for the finishing touches! You can add small branches, wispy flowers or seed heads and some moss to give it extra depth. Make sure to look at it from all angles.
- Your wreath is ready to hang! You can use a wreath door hanger or simply a piece of jute twine as shown here. Protecting it from the elements (e.g. hanging it under a porch or indoors) will increase its longevity.
2. A Pumpkin and Gourd Centerpiece
Tip: make your table centerpiece on a tray or container with handles to ensure you can move it around easily.
Pumpkins are ready when the first leaves fall and are thus quintessential to creating an autumnal look in your home. This can be a great way to store and display homegrown or store-bought edible squash & pumpkins until ready to eat: just make sure they are kept rather cool and out of direct sunlight.
Simply get stacking:
- Pick a color palette which draws highlights from your existing decor (for example a wall or pillow color).
- Make sure to vary size, shape and texture.
- Add some greenery and dried seed heads for the perfect centerpiece.
- You can create these compositions for both indoor and outdoor use!
3. A Succulent Arrangement
With the temperatures dropping in the fall (at least here in the Northern Hemisphere), we spend less time outside and prefer the warm comfort of our homes. But you don’t have to wait until spring to enjoy plants in your home: houseplants help you keep green around.
If you are busy or cannot keep a plant alive, succulents are for you! They require little care (once a week watering and mostly indirect sunlight) and look gorgeous all year round. You can make your arrangements as small or large as you want: again varying colors, shapes and textures will help contrast each plant. Top-up your soil with moss to give your arrangement an extra polished look.
Tip: Make sure to use specialist cactus soil to give your plants the best chance of success and ensure their roots aren’t too wet!
